Jeddah Snow Village, Saudi Arabia
Years: 2011 - 2013
Value: £30m
Undertaken while at Battle McCarthy
Project Brief:
Renovation project to build a new snow-themed adventure park on top of an existing supermarket within the Mall of Arabia. The park was to include ski slopes, toboggan runs, ice climbing walls and rope courses etc.
Challenges:
The activities and functions within the park presented dynamic layouts and complex structural loads, which had to be integrated with the existing structure below. These connections had to be designed to stop thermal bridges developing, while the steel frames also had to be able to resist thermal swings in excess of 45 degrees from construction to sub chilling, and then allowed to expand and contract should the mechanical equipment fail without any structural damage. This was especially important at beam-to-beam connections.
