Monte Carlo Rooftop Forest
Year: 2022
Value: Undisclosed
Project Brief:
The client wished to introduce a significant set of biodiverse roof top gardens to their property, which was built above an existing office building meaning the roof could not be strengthened from below.
Process:
The conventional process would be to make a series of pessimistic assumptions about any areas of ambiguity, including the existing loading, frame arrangement, and conditions, when looked at holistically this tends to produce a model with is unrealistically conservative.
To combat this, a Monte Carlo based statical model was built to investigate the likelihood of strengthening to the roof being required, and then subsequently a planting arrangement was agreed with the Architect and Arboriculturist which minimised the effect on the existing frame while maximising the planting cover.
