Battersea Power Station P6 Meanwhile

Year: 2022-2023

Value: Undisclosed

The P6 site at the landmark Battersea Power Station redevelopment is one of the last to be developed as it was used as the staging area for many of the earlier phases.

We were asked to provide structural design for the meanwhile use which involved a 110m long treeline elevated 2 storeys up, made of recycled shipping containers and precast walls. There is accommodating in the lower shipping containers for commercial use.

We sought to reuse materials wherever possible. The shipping containers were recovered from the shipping industry and the lightweight structural fill being identified onsite for reuse (though new material was brought onsite due to sequencing)

The upper containers needed to span over the lower containers so we had to slot in a reinforcing steel space frame with timber infill to support trees and soil because the load was in excess of 3x higher than the existing containers could support

The space frame connections were analysed in detail to maximise efficiency for the fabricators choose construction sequence

The structure is built on ex industrial fill material and above existing Thames Water infrastructure meaning piled foundations would have been complex. The solution was to minimise the superstructure weight with hidden lightweight structural fill within the planters

The site is currently under construction with the main structural works complete and the trees installed
